Welcome Book
This electronic welcome book contains the most up-to-date information on Edelweiss Cabin.
CONTACT
We want you to have a five-star experience at Edelweiss Cabin. If there is anything that concerns you, or that we can help with, don’t hesitate to call.
Denise’s cell phone is (516) 509-5214.
Fred’s cell phone is (516) 510-9901.
SETTLING IN
PARKING
Please park on the gravel sections of the driveway.
During winter, the driveway will be plowed whenever three or more inches of snow have fallen. However, please remember that the icy conditions in wintertime may cause you to get stuck no matter how well we have plowed.
Snow tires/chains and four-wheel-drive are essential. Attempting to drive in the Catskills in winter with any other vehicle is asking for trouble.
During inclement weather, or when an overnight snowfall is predicted, parking vehicles on the road and walking down to the cabin is one way to ensure you will not get stuck.
GSP NAVIGATION
If you plan to use your phone to navigate to anywhere from the cabin, remember to program your phone before leaving the cabin, while still connected to wifi.
When heading to points north, some apps will tell you to take Sally’s Alley (the road you turn off from onto Vega Mountain Road, before approaching our street). Don’t do it! The dead-end signs on northbound Sally’s Alley are more accurate than the apps, and you will eventually be forced to retrace your steps. It’s a pretty ride, though!
WIFI
Here in the Catskills, technology has not kept pace with the scenery. For this reason, we have two sources of wifi:
The first is the fastest-speed wifi available from our local provider. The user name is ARRIS-BA8C-5G. The password is 2JL445100405.
We also have Starlink, the satellite system. That user name is edelweiss and the password is 669AutumnBreeze.
PHONE SERVICE
Cell-phone coverage in the Catskills is spotty at best. You will need to connect to wifi to use your cell phone in the house.
ELECTRICITY
Power outages in the area sometimes occur, but typically only last for a few minutes.
TELEVISION
There is a smart TV in every bedroom, as well as in the great room. Please remember to log out of any apps before check-out.
LAUNDRY
The stackable washer and dryer are located in the main bathroom behind the door. We provide some complimentary detergent.
SLEEPING OPTIONS
Edelweiss Cabin has three bedrooms: two with queen beds and one with a full bed and en-suite bathroom.
If additional sleeping space is required, the leather couch in the living room converts into a futon bed.
The loft bedroom contains a metal daybed that has a standard mattress and a trundle – perfect for kids. The trundle can also be raised to create an almost-queen-sized bed. The daybed is already outfitted with freshly laundered standard sheets.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL
FANS
In summer, our ceiling fans (one located at the top of the second-floor landing, the other in the loft bedroom) create a comfortable breeze. Controls for the fan are found on the wall to the right of the kitchen and to the left of the bathroom door.
Opening the window above the sink and the front door so that only the screens are closed will create a refreshing cross current. There is also a high-powered fan in the corner near the wood stove that moves a surprising amount of air around.
Remember that in the evenings, temperatures drop sharply, and you likely will need to snuggle under a quilt.
HEATING / WOOD STOVE
Because it is constructed with full-size logs – no pseudo for us! – Edelweiss Cabin is well insulated, retaining a great deal of heat during the cold winter months.
For your comfort and convenience, all the first-floor rooms have electrically heated floors, which are individually controlled by switches in each room. (Please do not raise the floor temperature above 78 degrees, as that will damage the engineered flooring.) There are also space heaters and quilts should you desire additional warmth.
On the coldest days, you may wish to utilize the wood-burning stove. We provide complimentary firewood for you, which is located to the left of the stove.
• Remember that wood stoves become exceedingly hot and will create serious burns if touched.
• Use the gloves provided to open the stove door to add wood.
• Always supervise children whenever the stove is in use.
The wood stove is preloaded with a Duraflame log.
To operate the wood stove:
• Put on one of the gloves hanging on the hook to the left of the stove, next to the wall-mounted firewood rack. (We know the stove is probably cold. But you should never touch an unfamiliar wood stove with your bare hands – a good habit to get into!)
• Open the stove door with your gloved hand. If the stove is unlit, proceed without glove.
• Pull out the rod above the door of the wood stove to increase the air flow up the flue pipe.
• Open/spin the two round dials on the front of the stove to loosen them until they are positioned as far from the stove as possible to feed the fire.
• The stove will be pre-loaded with all you need to start a fire. Using a lighter (hanging on the same hook as the gloves), ignite the Duraflame log inside the stove, and close and latch the stove door.
• After 10 minutes, check on the progress of the fire by putting on safety gloves, opening the stove door and stoking the fire with the poker provided as needed.
• When the flue pipe temperature reads 150 (check the small gauge on the pipe), push the rod above the stove door back in, so that the steel stove can heat up fully and can generate heat.
• When the flue pipe temperature reads 300, you can close the lower vent dial on the door, spinning it until it is again positioned against the stove.
• When the stove is hot and operating at peak temperature, you will notice the stove turns a maroon color. You can continue to adjust the top vent to maintain an ideal operating temperature between 250 and 400 degrees.
• Periodically check the stove – always wearing safety gloves – and add firewood as necessary.
• To keep the warm air circulating, turn on the ceiling fan. The controls are on the wall to the left of the main bedroom door.
The firewood in the wall-mounted rack will last the better part of a weekend. Additional firewood is stored in the octagon-shaped stacked racks on your immediate left as you walk out the front door.
We can’t say it enough: Wood stoves become exceeding hot and can cause serious burns. Do not touch the stove without wearing safety gloves. Do not place anything on the stove.
If you need to leave the cabin for lengthy periods of time, please pull out the rod and close both disks.
CABIN RULES
SMOKING
Edelweiss Cabin is a non-smoking property. Please do not smoke, vape or light incense in the cabin. Violating this policy will result in a $250 fee.
BATHROOMS
Please be aware that the Catskills is an environmentally sensitive area, and we need your cooperation to keep our septic system running efficiently.
DO NOT FLUSH anything other than toilet paper. PLEASE, no tampons, sanitary napkins, condoms or other objects.
Both bathrooms have covered trash bins with plastic liners where you can place your disposable items. Please remember to bag this bathroom trash along with your regular trash.
ADDITIONAL GUESTS
Please note that your booking is based on the number of guests you have registered.
We regret that unregistered guests cannot be accommodated at the cabin.
Should circumstances change and you wish to amend the reservation, please contact us immediately.
PETS
We love animals, but Edelweiss Cabin doesn’t allow four-footed guests.
GREAT OUTDOORS
PRIVACY
The property is protected by a Ring doorbell at the front door. For your security, there is also a remote camera aimed at the driveway entrance.
There are no other cameras on the property, and none inside the cabin.
As for the old-fashioned kind of privacy – the non-electronic kind – Edelweiss Cabin is located in a very secluded area. However, to enhance your sense of privacy, every bedroom is equipped with black-out drapes. The drapes in the common area – in front of the sliding doors and behind the couch – are also lined, and when drawn will provide you with complete privacy.
HOT TUB
We work hard to ensure that you have a clean and sparkling hot tub awaiting you at Edelweiss Cabin. In turn, we hope you can follow these simple rules:
• Please shower before using the hot tub. Soap, oils and other residues contribute to an icky aquaculture!
• Please refrain from doing anything in the hot tub that you wouldn’t mind your mother seeing.
• If you will be using the hot tub on consecutive days, it is advisable to "shock" the hot tub at the end of each day's use. (Make sure there is no one in the hot tub!) The spa additives are located in the upper kitchen cabinet directly to the right of the sliding deck door. The canisters are labelled "Spa Shock." If you are only using the tub once, no need to treat, as we drain, clean and refill the hot tub after each guest.
• The rental agreement you signed outlined the many risk factors involved with hot tubs. Use a clear head and common sense when enjoying the hot tub, and remember that you do so at your own risk.
EXPLORING
Edelweiss Cabin is located on eight pristine acres, all of which are ready for you to explore.
A map of the property is posted on the side of the refrigerator. The stone walls that are parallel to the front and back of the house mark the property lines; please do not go beyond them, as you will be trespassing on our neighbors’ property.
To go deeper into the property, walk along the unpaved road that runs along the lefthand side of the property (if the main road is behind you). This will lead to our meadow. Continuing straight back, you will encounter some fresh springs. The property ends at the stream, where you will find some white lounge chairs.
Please note that area beyond the meadow will require waterproof boots or shoes, as there are some wet/marshy areas.
WILDLIFE
We cannot emphasize this enough: While we strive to provide you with every modern convenience indoors, there are also many creatures outdoors that may challenge your comfort level if they come too close.
Deer, bear, skunks, eagles, snakes, wild cats and other predators are commonplace throughout the Catskills. The best way to view them – especially the bears – is from afar.
Do not leave ANY food outdoors. Not on the deck, not in your car. Doing so is an open invitation for ill-mannered carnivores to amble up for a closer look (and sniff).
If you use the barbecue, clean up all food after use, and immediately scrub and clean the grill with the barbecue utensils provided.
Do not leave open doors unattended, especially outdoors.
TRASH
Extra white kitchen garbage bags are located in the bottom of the trash drawer beneath the deck-facing kitchen window.
Extra black garbage bags are located in the cabinet beneath the kitchen sink.
Please leave all household trash in the bear-proof metal garbage container. It is located on the gravel driveway on the righthand side as you exit the property. Please be sure to secure the clasp on the container so that the doors cannot be opened by our ursine friends.
Please remember to bag ALL your trash, including bathroom trash cans.
FIRST AID
For minor cuts, there is a box of adhesive bandages under the sink in the main bathroom. A more comprehensive first-aid kit is also located there.
The nearest hospital is Margaretville Memorial Hospital (42084 State Highway 28, Margaretville, 845-586-2631).
There are no walk-in urgent-care clinics in the immediate area. All are an hour away. They include:
WellNow Urgent Care (Oneonta, 5001 State Highway 23; 607-376-5346), www.wellnow.com/locations/oneonta/
Nuvance Health (Kingston, 1240 Ulster Avenue; 845-443-8740), www.nuvancehealth.org/locations/nuvance-health-urgent-care-kingston

PROVISIONING
GROCERY SHOPPING
The closest supermarket is Freshtown in Margaretville (36 Bridge Street). There is a surprisingly good selection of organic items and locally produced dairy products.
Just around the corner is one of our favorites: the pocket-sized emporium called Home Goods of Margaretville (784 Main Street). Groceries range from blood-orange juice to polenta-rosemary bread, and there’s a fantastic selection of gadgets, barware, cookware, knives, and on and on.
In a pinch, the Dollar Store in Grand Gorge (36558 NY 23) has a surprising selection of food and supplies, as well as those irresistible candy Cow Tails, and is usually open until 10 p.m.
CONVENIENCE STORES
If you need to pick up a quick bag of chips or a deli sandwich, the closest option is the Sunoco gas station and minimart on Main Street in the town of Roxbury.
(Simple directions: Right out of driveway to end of Autumn Breeze Road, right on Vega Mountain Road until it dead-ends into Route 30. Make a right on Route 30, and gas station will be about a block on your left, set back a bit.)
FARMERS MARKET
Pakatan Farmer’s Market at the Round Barn
46676 NY 30, Halcottsville, N.Y.
Just a short ride from Edelweiss Cabin, open on Saturdays from mid-May through mid-October.
LIQUOR STORE
Roxbury Wines and Spirits
53484 State Highway 30
(607) 326-6200
Open Monday through Saturday, Noon to 6 p.m. Closed Sundays.
DINING OUT
One ginormous caveat before you begin: Area restaurants and typically open Thursday through Sunday.
Monday through Wednesday can be something of a restaurant desert -- which is why our kitchen is so well stocked!
We strongly recommend calling to confirm hours or make a reservation. The Catskills are still very rural and very laidback, and eateries sometimes will not have updated information on their websites.

This bite-sized town has more than a half-dozen used-bookstores – great for wiling away a sleepy afternoon. It’s a bit of a ride, but through impossibly beautiful Catskills countryside, so who’s complaining?
DAY TRIPS
As if there isn’t plenty to do in our corner of the Catskills, there are some very manageable day trips you may want to embark on.
Howe Caverns
255 Discovery Drive, Howes Cave, NY 12092
The second-most-visited natural attraction in New York State, second only to Niagara Falls, this limestone cave is 156 feet below ground and contains an underground lake named after the goddess Venus. It was discovered in the summer of 1842 when a farmer noticed his cows constantly gathering near some bushes at what turned out to be the cave entrance. Named for that same farmer, Howe Caverns maintains a constant temperature of 52 degrees, so be sure to bring a heavy sweatshirt or jacket for your spelunking adventure.
Cooperstown
Of course, Cooperstown is synonymous for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (www.basehall.org). Perhaps slightly less known is the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum (99 Main St., www.baseballwaxmuseum.com/).
There’s also the Farmers’ Museum (www.farmersmuseum.org), which depicts 19th-Century farm life. And the Fenimore Art Museum (www.fenimoreartmuseum.org), a world-class collection of folk art located on the banks of Otsego Lake.
Kingston Stockade District
Intersection of Wall and John Streets, Kingston, New York
As New York State’s first capital, Kingston is chockablock with history: Its Four Corners (John and Crown streets) is the oldest intersection of colonial-era buildings in the nation. But there’s also plenty of fine dining and shopping, including an impressive array of vintage stores.
Woodbury Commons
498 Red Apple Ct., Central Valley, NY 10917
www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/woodbury-common
We know, we know, it’s counterintuitive to spend a day at the outlets when you’re supposed to be communing with nature. Then again, no bald eagle ever had anything over Missoni at 70 percent off. This five-star shopping experience is a must for those who refuse to pay retail, with a particular focus on clothing and accessories. From Abercrombie & Fitch to Zales, this is one of the largest contiguous outlet centers in the world, with some 220 stores. And don’t forget the food court: We’re partial to the Thai Chicken Crunch bowl at Just Salad.
